And they are off!!

The boys started school a few weeks ago.  Alex is off to middle school and Connor is off to High school. It seemed a little surreal dropping them off on the first day, half way between their two schools. Alex went one way towards his school with his back pack and skate (long) board, looking pretty confident for his first day of Middle school, although I'm sure there were some nervous feelings bubbling just under the surface.

Connor walked the other direction towards the high school. Once he was a few feet from the car his demeanor changed and he fell into stride along a couple of his friends that were walking up. I was thinking, there he goes, into his own world that we really have no control over. It's his life for the next few hours, he makes the decisions and choices that will mold and shape him into the man he is on his way to becoming.

I have to say, I felt differently this year. Normally, every year when I drop them off for the first day of school I get emotional. This year I felt almost numb and over the past few weeks I've realized what I was feeling, if I'm being honest, was fear. It's scary to see them growing up so fast. I know I should be excited for them but as a mom it's hard to push away all the thoughts of what could happen. These are such important years and there are so many temptations surrounding them. It's hard not to focus on the "what ifs".

On the other hand, I know at their core they are both good people, smarter and more confident then I ever was at that age, that's for sure!

You just have to hope and pray that you've put enough good stuff in there and given them enough direction to make good decisions. Of course they are going to make mistakes, that's the way we learn. Every time they walk out that door, I just hope they come back safe and sound and that mistakes that are made are just painful enough to help them grow but not enough to damage them for life.

So on that note, here are some pictures of the first day............

Alex graduates!

It's hard for me to believe Alex will be going to middle school and Connor to high school. Wow how the  time flies! In a way it's a relief to be all done with elementary school, on the other hand I can't help but be a little melancholy to not have any kiddos in grade school any more.

Alex had a little continuation ceremony on the last day of school. It was quite a year for him. He grew a lot, in every way. I honestly think he's going to love middle school!

So proud of you Alex. As I watch you mature I see the man you are growing up to be. A young man with integrity who is very strong in himself and his convictions but very sensitive and respectful of others. Reminds me of another man I know :)

                                Congratulations Alex!!

Alex's Orchestra concert

Alex posing for me as we are walking out the door for the concert.

A few weeks ago, Alex had an Orchestra concert.

At the beginning of the year I posted about Alex wanting to play the violin HERE.

I really didn't think he would enjoy it. He loves music and is an excellent drummer but I thought violin would just be to tedious for him.

Well, I was wrong. He stuck with it all year and progressed very well every step of the way.

One of the highlights I think for him was when they got to play "We will rock you"! Isn't orchestra supposed to be all stuffy and classical... not this group!

At the concert they even had an ELECTRIC VIOLINIST. I had never even heard of an electric violin but it really was beautiful. You can hear what one sounds like HERE.

Now the question Alex is deciding is whether to go ahead with Violin next year or now that he can join the band, will it be the snare drum. During the course of the year his plan was always to do the Snare next year (4th graders could only do orchestra) So in 5th grade he will have a choice...

What?? 5th grade?

I know, so hard to believe he will be in 5th grade, then "sniff sniff" off to middle school. I can't even think about that right now. That's a whole 'nother post for a whole 'nother day.

But now he seems to be changing his mind. He really loves the violin so, we will see...

To be continued...

For now it's time to kick back and enjoy the  summer!

Mad Scientists...

Grandpa, Mark and Alex had discussed Alex's Science fair project for weeks. They reminded me of mad scientist disappearing into the basement to discuss, build and experiment. They came up with an idea of a water and oil separating device to compare it to the oil spill. You know the one. You may have heard about it on the news. (Unless you were hiding under a rock).
Grandpa built a great device that had to be "tweeked" a little as we got down to the wire but it all worked out perfectly in the end.

Alex wasn't too thrilled about Dad taking a picture at school but I'm sure Mark said something along the lines of "Sorry bud, Mom's orders" Can't you just see it in his smile?  :)

On the day of the science fair Mark was planning to be there in case Alex needed help but Alex was determined to do this on his own. I was a little nervous because it did involve oil and food coloring... what if it spilled or didn't work? In the end we decided that if he wanted to do it on his own then good for him! And he did excellent! No problems other than when he retrieved it the next day, with the "help" of a couple of buddies. Someone (not Alex) may have spilled a little on the library's carpeted floor :0. I called and offered to come clean it up but was told the boys did a good job of cleaning it up themselves. Shewwww... with all the budget cuts in our school I was a little concerned we may be responsible for replacing the carpet! Anyway it all worked out in the end. I am curious though if there isn't a little stain, (it was oil after all) as a reminder of Alex for Science fairs to come.

Thank you Grandpa for all your hard work and determination although part of me suspects you enjoyed as much as your grandson!

By the way Alex ended up winning for his grade! They don't give out ribbons anymore but he received a certificate and was announced over the intercom. Good job Alex!

Grandpa also "helped" Alex with his science fair project last year.

Alex's awesome valentine box

As he does every year, Alex came up with a really cool idea for his valentine box. He needed one for school for when they exchange valentines.. you know the drill. In years past Mark has been great about helping him bring his vision to reality :)  He has also made some pretty unique ones for Connor.

This year Alex wanted a.......... robot.

Check it out.

ROMEO AND JULIET

This is a post that is a little overdue. Connor performed in his school play "Romeo and Juliet" a couple of weeks ago. He played the part of Sampson (one of Juliets cousins) He was in the opening scene with quite a few lines AND a fight scene. He also appeared in many other scenes and even got to "twirl" Juliet in one scene. That was one of my favorite moments of the play.

We were very proud of him. We thought he did a great job! I took some pictures at one of the dress rehearsals. They didn't turn out great but I will post them anyway.

Extra Extra.... part 2

Our very own Connor will be performing in his schools' Fall production of Romeo and Juliet!

He will be playing the part of Sampson. He has several lines in the first scene and appears in a few others. He was pretty excited as were we. I think it will be a great experience.

It almost didn't happen because auditions were moved up and he didn't know about it until the last minute. I got a frantic call at work.........he needed the permission slip, which just happened to be in my purse. Mark rushed over to my office, I ran it out to the car and wished him a quick "good luck!". He was supposed to have a monologue ready but since he thought it was the next week he didn't. So............ he winged it. The next day he was on the call back sheet, yeah!! Unfortunately he got the dates mixed up and missed his call back!! That's my Connor, probably the result of all the helicopter parenting I've been known to do in the past...nahhhhh. Anyway he has never been the most ahem... organized kid. Anyway the drama teacher (bless his heart) caught Connor the next day and told him he missed his call back and let him reschedule.

We went to parent teacher conferences a few nights ago and his drama teacher subtlety mentioned that if Connor hadn't missed his call back he was seriously considering him for Romeo!!!

Oh life lessons are great aren't they??

As they say in show BIZ... BREAK A LEG CONNOR!

Connor's last day of school and our move

Today was Connor's last day of 6th grade. I snapped this picture as he was walking to the car after school. I knew posing for a picture would be corny to him so I thought I would just get a quick candid shot. It was really windy so didn't come out great.

We are officially moved. We are temporarily residing at an extended stay hotel. We are in a two bedroom suite. The perks are breakfast buffet every morning, three complimentary dinners a week (which we will take advantage of), a basketball court, swimming pool (that will open this weekend) and it is pet friendly! Other than the dogs being a little bit of a challenge (keeping them from barking at noises in the hall and getting them out for exercise and potty breaks regularly) it is kind of nice. I'm especially enjoying the housekeeping! It's pretty wonderful to leave for a bit and come back to clean towels and beds made! I could get used to this.

We are planning to be here for 30 days. I'm sure we are in the newlywed stage and the new will wear off. In the meantime I'm going to pretend I'm on vacation. I need to come up with a story to tell the people I meet here. Maybe I could come up with a new one every day. Tomorrow I will be from Canada eh? Maybe the next day I will be from the south y'all! This could be fun. Too bad I'm not a very good actor...haha

Science Fair Project

Alex, with the help of Grandpa finished his Science Fair project and displayed it last Friday. He was very proud of the fact that this was his first individual (all by himself) Science fair project. He had done them in the past with a group.

When we first heard that he wanted to do a SFP (it wasn't required this year) we did what we always do when there is a Science project in the works. We called Grandpa. We know that he always has the best ideas.

He came up with the idea of a "Hot Dog Cooker" or "How to cook a hot dog using electricity." It was a project he had done with Alex's aunt Monica many years ago. He actually still had her poster board display and the most of the parts for it. Alex thought it was pretty cool that Aunt Monica had done the same project when she was little.

It went over very well. Alex said he was getting "squished" by all the kids surrounding him and his project. I think the smell of a cooking hot dog might have had something to do with it. They each got a little sample.

Here are a few pictures of him working on his project.

Have you heard of Flat Stanley??

I have to admit that I haven't actually read any of the books but Alex's 3rd grade class did and they made their own flat Stanleys. I think the premise is that something fell on Stanley and made him flat. He was mailed to a friend for a visit. The kids all made their own and then chose someone to send them too. Alex chose to send his to Grandma Susie in Kansas. Alex sent it with a letter requesting that she "show" him around and take a few pictures. Well, Grandma came through BIG! She took lots of pictures and actually put together a scrapbook of her and Stanley's adventures.

Alex was so proud when it arrived back at his class room. Here are a few pictures of Grandma and Stanley.

Alex chose to make his Stanley a "Ninja".

Thank you Grandma!!!

First day of middle school ...

Monday was Connor's first day of middle school. It was a half day so Tuesday was his first full day. I got a picture of him Monday morning before leaving for school.

He really seems to be enjoying it so far. He said he likes changing classes. He has been chatty and excited after each day. His favorite class so far is "Consumer family studies". He's excited because they get to cook!!

What is it about that first day of school. I cry everytime and it always catches me off guard. I think I'm fine and then as soon as I see them walking up to the school.... well, it's all over. I watched Connor jump out of the car into a big group of kids. He started searching for a familiar face I'm sure. I couldn't keep spying because I was in the car pool and I had to drive forward, darn! I drove away thinking about his very first day of preschool.. didn't seem that long ago.

We also started football this week and between both boys we have practice every night this week and probably for the next few weeks until games start. Both boys coaches are older and very experienced. Even though they are stern, the boys like them and are anxious to learn.

Alex is back to school next week. Maybe I will have more time for blogging then.
