Perfect Moment Monday

I Capture
Perfect Moments.

My Perfect moment this week was during our "reading time". A few weeks ago I talked to Mark and we decided to implement a 20 minute a night reading time. This is in addition to my 8 yr olds required 15 minutes of reading for homework that he reads outloud to Mark or I. It seems with two boys, our house is often filled with jumping, yelling, banging, running in and out, phone ringing.. etc. That is fine but I thought wouldn't it be nice if we had at least 20 minutes each evening to just have quiet and it would be good for the boys to sit down and read. They have lots of good books they haven't read because they just aren't the type of kids who love to sit down and read. I also go to the library at least once a week so the choices are unlimited.

Anyway there was a little grumbling at first and I'm sure a little of just staring at the page and not really reading. I decided not to say much and just see if it sparks something. Well a couple of days ago we were all sitting in our favorite comfy spots in the living room reading. I looked around and Connor was reading a book he had gotten for Christmas..something about Colorado ghosts and he was really into it! He was actually turning pages. Then I looked at Alex and he is intently reading one of his "Tacky the Penguin" books (which is a very cute book if you want to check it out)and actually smiling at what he was reading... mmmmmmmmmmmm Mommy's heart was happy. I love reading and love to see them get the enjoyment I do out of it.

And last but not least. My hubby is not a reader. He never sits down long enough unless it's something factual that he needs to know. Well he's been reading " Mike Nelson's Weather Almanac" and actually reading not just skimming. He has told me more than once thank you for coming up with the idea because he is actually enjoying it very much and learning to like reading.. :)

I am reading a book called Hold Tight. You can read a review on it and other books over at my friend Terra's book review blog, Tales From the Nightstand.

I have to give credit where credit is due. My friend Terra actual planted a seed when she told me about our friend Paige who does this with her family..

That is the best idea! My hubby can't read a whole page before nodding off though. I can read for hours if I let myself. :)

What a great idea. I, too, think it would be perfect to spark a love of reading in my kids.

Thank you for sharing your perfect moment, visiting from Weebles Webblog. You have a beautiful family. I have two sons also, ages almost 14 and 11 y/o. I'm confident we will all survive puberty.

What a great idea. We have reading time but it is more for the required school reading like you mentioned. Have you seen the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books? My 8 year old LOVES it. he does not like reading and this is the first time EVER that he WANTS to read. Its like a miracle.

This is a great idea. Thanks for planting the seed and letting it grow over in my direction. My children are still 1 and 2 so I have some time to develop this habit. I am really excited about seeing it happen with them when they are older. We already love turning the pages and looking at pictures! maybe they will be fond readers of my blog!

Very nice -I'm not a reader either, so I'm trying extra hard to read to Lila every night...I would like her to enjoy reading! I bet you were so proud -what a wonderful idea and a perfect mommy moment!
